After ten years at the BBC he joined Channel 4 in 1998. He anchors the Channel 4 Evening News from Friday to Sunday, and was the main anchor for the News at Noon on weekdays.

You’ve been on twitter for just over a year now, have you found it addictive at all? How did you break the addiction?

It can be quite addictive…but to be honest i don’t have time to become too hooked

Did you join Twitter for personal or professional reasons? How does it help/has it helped with your job?

For professional reasons – and yes it has helped, and we’re exploring new ways of using it, and I rather enjoy it for personal reasons too.

You’ve been involved in news reporting for quite a while now – how do you react to claims that it is dumbing down in general?

I think on the whole TV News is better than it has ever been. But some programmes are not what they used to be, and have gone downmarket.

Unbelievable. If you’d told the student me it’d happen I would have exploded. Toppable only by working with the young Julie Christie.

I became a fan of the Lions after seeing Barry Sanders play – what attracted you to the Dolphins?

Impressive jerry curl mullets,mercurial Dan Marino, and an exciting, cavalier team that never looked like winning the big one.See West Ham.

Many of the cast are difficult to track down, but thanks to the general public on twitter and facebook we have managed to find a few.

There have been a number of GH reunions over the years – why is this one special?

This reunion is special because its the first time 30 years of cast will be in the same place at the same time and its for charity

What came first the ‘tache or the idea for the ‘tache show? And why?

The idea was 1st. I am not sure quite how it came about, but started wondering why tache had taken rap for Hitler and if that could change.

Your Headmaster’s Son show got great reviews last year – what do you think in it worked so well in connecting with people?

It was about looking back at embarrassments of adolescence from the safe distance of middle age. And was honest. People identified with it.

You’ve blogged for ages, are a committed twitter-er, and let Andrew Collins into yr house – isn’t that a definition of a geek?

Don’t think all geeks let Collings into their house, but I’m a friend of geeks & geeky things and they in turn (mainly) are friends with me.

You turned down a scholarship in the US to study at Manchester – what do you think you’d be doing if you had accepted?

I turned down a drumming Scholarship in the states ,so if I had taken it I’d be drumming, rather than acting for a living.

You’re back in Corrie now – why is it that so many comedians seem to be turning up in it these days?

One of the joys of Coronation St. Is that it exploits the lighter side of life, so comedians are an obvious choice for roles.

I don’t have favourite twitterer although I love it when my comedy chums start hashtags eg.#three words after sex. They’re great fun.

Since 2005 Porter has suffered from Alopecia causing her to lose much of her hair, which she refused to hide with a wig but instead became a prominent figure in raising awareness of the condition. Her autobiography was published in 2007.

Wikipedia says you tried to join Blue Peter? True? Who got the job instead of you?

I went for an audition for blue peter but I didn’t make it. Quite glad as it was a bit too goodie goodie for me.

You’ve had a famous battle with Alopecia, do you think your honesty about it has helped others?

I think being honest about my alopecia hopefully has helped other sufferers realize they are not alone.

What’s the attraction of twitter for you? And will the (becoming legendary) fluff reports continue?

I love the fact that Twitter is instant. I know I can count on someone to talk to and make me smile at all times of the day/night.

Absolutely. All the rehearsals were conducted in Yiddish. And you’ll notice that in most of my roles I look Jewish

It’s said you have a sitcom in the works set in the office of a celebrity magazine – true? If so, when will we see it?

Wikipedia’s wonderful, isn’t it? – I directed a pilot for ITV but they didn’t go with it. But I’m not bitter. Really. No. Really.

You seem to be tweeting a lot – is it a new way to waste time, or are you the master of your twitter use?

I am Twitter’s bitch. Twitter’s gimp. I’m addicted. It’s the earning a living/eating/sleeping bit that’s the time-waster now.
